Bauhaus Museum Dessau - OPENSTUDIO
Bauhaus Museum Dessau

The Bauhaus under Walter Gropius sought the fusion of ‘art into industry’. Bauhaus textiles – historically seen as ‘women’s work’ – are now regarded as emblematic of that mission. Our proposal for the new Bauhaus Museum explores the concept of weaving together themes and concepts, just as threads are woven to create cloth. The resulting building is embedded into the city and the park, reinvigorates them, and allows them to be brought into a stronger relationship with one another.

The materials of the building envelope are pale brick and iridescent ceramic tiles woven together to become solid and figured close to the ground, becoming increasingly reflective the higher the building rises. At the upper levels, where the iridescent tiles are predominant, the façade will reflect different weather and light conditions.
